One of the largest pros to a kitchen island is having that space for friends or family members to congregate in the kitchen area. One can place bar stools, or high seated chairs up against a kitchen island which invites that comfort zone. Most of us are aware that people tend to congregate to the kitchen area, after all it is the heart of the home.
The first step to using a kitchen island in a small space is to shrink the counter space. While this may appear to sacrifice usability, you can still retain functionality by leaving just enough space for two or three people to sit and eat.
Kitchen islands are a tricky item to successfully add to your kitchen design, but well worth considering when you are remodeling your kitchen. You may be surprised at the increase in convenience in meal preparation and added counter space an island will provide. But, it is hard to visualize the space required and the best size for any island addition, so be sure you get all the information you need to make the best decision for your kitchen.
An island can also be used to set up kitchen equipment like a cook top, allowing a cook to speak to the customers while they cook. Other equipment such as a microwave or even a dishwasher are also available in the room of the island. You can even use this room for different kitchen items or even as a cabinet.
And as already stated, the countertop material does not necessarily have to match the rest of the kitchen, provided it is proportional to the rest of the kitchen. For chopping purposes a countertop butcher block is nice while the countertops for marble, granite and bakery are appropriate.
